What are those letters and numbers to the left?

This is a standard approach, based on the D'Aboville genealogical numbering system. Don't be put off by the strings of letters and numbers. In this case the A represents the patriarch of the family. B's represent the first generations, his children, followed by a number that represents the order of their birth. Under each is the next generation and all the descendants of an individual are listed before the list reverts back to that individual's sibling(s) and descendants.
